My Fatty Liver Story

Hi all, myself Narayanan and i am 33 yrs old and my life took turn for the worse when I was diagnosed with Fatty Liver (Grade 2, NASH via ultrasound). Clinically NASH can be confirmed only via Liver Biopsy, but hey who cares, now i personally feel the diagnosis of NASH by the doctor was blessing in disguise as it made me mentally stronger to beat this so called disease and I did so in exactly 2 months and 15 days. Took an Ultrasound and LFTs on Apr 9th, AST was 20 and ALT was 17 and the doctor was not able to find any FAT on my liver. Tears were just flowing my eyes, my god I have cured this condition in 2 months, whereas historically it takes about 9 months to 1 year to reverse and in some unlucky folks it will lead to Cirrhosis which can lead to liver failure, may be i was lucky, who knows!!!
I hear people and doctors say all the time, its common to have fatty liver, though it is true, it doesn't mean it is normal, we need to take drastic steps to cure it or it will wreak havoc @ a later date.
First and foremost thing to fix is our diet, our Indian food is so rich in carbohydrates be it rice or chapathi, it converts in to sugar and build up of sugar over a period of time leads to Fatty Liver. We need to control our carbo intake and increase FAT and Proteins in our diet, Yes you heard it right, eating FAT is not wrong, but the FAT source has to come from fresh Paneer, Peanut Butter & goat cheese and not from absolute barbecue or barbecue nation or Thalapakatti. Even vegetarian hotels like saravana bhavan use a lot of vegetable oil in their food so that it tastes better. I am not here to say that we shouldn't eat outside, but should restrict ourselves to eating outside may be once in 3 months. Proteins can be taken from Tofu, Dal and Sundal. (Vegetarians)
My Fatty Liver Story:
I generally take Master Health Check up every year and it was around Jan 2018 when i had an ultrasound, i was diagnosed with Fatty liver Grade 1 with Hepatomegaly (17.3 cms). My ALT was 120 and AST was 80 and I was told by the doctor that having fatty liver is normal and i just need to take care of my diet, her opinion was that, everybody has this so no worries, ALAS, i trusted her and didn't give a damn. Fast forward one year @ Jan 22nd 2019, again i took USG, my report came as Hepatomegaly (17 cms) with Grade 2 fatty liver. AST was 53 and ALT was 115. So basically over the past 1 year, my liver has accumulated more fat. Luckily this time, i took it seriously and met the head of Hepatology Global Hospital Perumbakkam (Dr. Joy Varghese). He told me just one thing, lose weight and meet me in 3 months. He prescribed me Vitamin E (400 mg per day, tocofil) and Urodosoxelic acid (UDCA, 300 mg).
Night of Jan 22nd:
I just read, read and read lots of stories about NAFLD and NASH and basically the opinion was its not curable and in some people the reversal do happen and it generally takes 9 months to 1 year. I still remember the morning of 23rd. I just got up @ 2AM and started crying badly for 30 minutes or so reason being fatty liver can lead to Cirrhosis/Liver cancer (HCC). I was imagining the worst, what will happen if I get cirrhosis, will i need a liver transplant.I have a small child and my mind was racing so badly, I just wanted this misery to end. This may look silly to many people, but it is those who are personally undergoing these things will know the extent of it.
Fatty liver can lead to Liver cancer: Full form of NASH is non alcoholic steatohepatitis.
 My weight loss story:
I was not grossly overweight to start with, my height is 189 cms (6.2 feet) and i was weighing around 96.4 kgs. But the problem was i was having so much of Visceral fat. The first week (Jan 22nd thru 29th) was maniac, i was surfing what to eat and what not to eat, and was totally confused, whether to eat Carbohydrates or skip it. Then I came across Dr.Eric Berg videos in Youtube, He talks about Ketogenic diet to reverse Fatty liver, but living in India and that too being a Vegetarian, having a Keto diet is practically ruled out. I just took the things that I can eat and then I formulated a plan for my diet. Details about my diet a bit later.
I drastically changed my diet, joined a gym only for weight training and then I ran/walked 10 kms a day and was climbing 20 floors daily. I checked my weight daily and from 96.4 taken on Jan 22nd, i have reduced to 80.3. Its because of combination of Diet/Gym/Walking & Running and medicine given by the doctor, i was able to overcome this. Plus, i didnt give a damn about anything for the past 2 months. In my mind the only thing was to get rid of this thing. I tracked my weight daily in excel sheet and that was a major motivation to see my weight constantly reducing.
My Diet:
First, i will list down the things that I ate. Black rice (200 gms cooked, Cauliflower/Cabbage/Brocolli/Spinach/Eggs (4 with yolks daily)/Black Channa occasionally, Ragi Dosa/Sambar/Sprouts/Salad (Onion, tomato, Cucumber with black pepper)/Dahi/Peanut butter, kiwi fruit, strawberry & papaya.
My sample diet for past 2 months:
Will get up around 4:30 AM and will have 30ml of Apple Cider Vinegar mixed in hot water (200 ml). Will hit the gym for an hour, on coming back i will have 28 to 40 gms of plain peanut butter. WIll have Cauliflower or Brocolli around 10AM, Black rice with Sambar or tamarind rasam and again brocolli or cauliflower around 12:30 to 1PM. Nuts, mainly Pista, Badam and Walnuts around 4PM and Ragi Dosa with onion & tomato chutney (or) 4 eggs with 100gm of Panner/Tofu (raw) at 6:30 PM.
Cruciferous vegtables are good for liver and i made sure to eat only Brocolli/Caulifower/Cabbage for 2 months continuously.
The thing that i followed religiously is to have my dinner @ 6 to 6:30PM and fasting for 15 hours, means breakfast around next day 9AM.
Foods that I loved but I skipped completely:
Sugar (White sugar, Jaggery, honey), Potato, White rice, Fried items & outside food. We have sugar in almost everything, white rice has tremendous amount of sugar. Carbohydrates is nothing but sugar. I ate relatively a lot of fat with less carbohydrates, not like a keto diet which has only 20mg of carbo intake.
Exercise:

Weight training in GYM for an hour in morning (Chest/Shoulders/Biceps/Squats etc) and running/walking in park for 10 kms (1 to 1:30 hours).
USG and LFTs reports taken @ Jan 21st

LFTs and USG taken on Apr 9th and Apr 11th respectively.

Finally how i looked then and now:-)

THEN!!!

NOW!!!

Lastly i should mention about my family, especially my mom and wife, who made sure that I get what i wanted when it comes to food, especially @ the time that i wanted, be it morning 4AM or at midnight. Remember eating healthy is not easy and not cheap too!!!

If i can succeed, you guys can succeed for sure, All the very best to those who have NAFLD to beat the disease.
